The memo none of us got

Why Agile is the golden standard for building software products? Because it works. It’s been working since 2001.

Why didn’t the rest of us get a memo that the old way of setting and achieving goals does not work?

  • 10-year plans – don’t work
  • Vision boards – don’t work
  • Affirmations – don’t work
  • Habits – don’t work
  • New Year’s resolutions – don’t work
  • Checklists – don’t work
  • Morning routines – don’t work

Be honest. You’ve tried all of these methods, haven’t you? Did you stick with it beyond the initial honeymoon phase?

How I discovered Agile

When I first discovered agile when working at a startup, I was blown away. And pissed at the same time.

Pissed because I couldn’t believe this framework was kept a secret by a small circle of software engineers while the rest of us were told the good old lies of longterm planning.

It was like they were driving ferraris while the rest of us were still commuting on horses.

  • They got clarity. We got confusion.
  • They got speed of execution. We got overwhelm.
  • They got the sense of adventure. We got the Groundhog Day.
  • They shipped impactful work. We were stuck checking off some meaningless tasks and habits.
  • They were busy building. We were stuck in analysis-paralysis.
  • They got to change dirextion on failed prohects. we had to stick with it no mwtter what.
  • They got to experiment. we just continued building resentment towards our life.

Applying Agile to personal productivity

It was 2014. Since then, I decided to forget everything I learned about goal setting and embrace an agile framework that:

  1. Helped make measurable progress
  2. Created valuable results
  3. Kept the whole process light
  4. Provided a sense of never ending adventure and experimentation
  5. Ruthlessly eliminated the non-essential things
  6. Prevented the Groundhog Day effect
  7. Reduced overwhelm
  8. Eliminated confusion

And most importantly…

  1. Helped me say goodbye to debilitating perfectionism, so that I can start making progress on my personal goals.

During the day, I would use Agile and Scrum at work as a Product Manager. Learned how it was applied to software development. At night, I would come home and see what can be applied to my personal life.

Results

I experimented a lot during the last 9 years.

I’m here to tell you how I was able to apply Agile and Scrum to my personal goals and how you can do the same.

I’ve used Agile principles to:

  • Change careers from supply chain to product management
  • Get a full scholarship for my masters
  • Finish my masters early
  • Get several academic papers published
  • Launch 2 businesses
  • Buy a house and renovate it
  • Organize a wedding and a honeymoon
  • Plan numerous events and trips for my family and friends
  • Move to a different country 3 times

This is not to brag. This is to showcase that Agile in combination with Scrum can be applied to ANY area of your life – from career and entrepreneurship to strengthening relationships and having a damn good life filled with hobbies, trips and friends get-togethers.

Creator of the Monthly Method

Monthly Method School was born

Years went by since I discovered Agile & Scrum at work. No one was talking about applying Agile to personal productivity. People were still stuck on creating 10-year plans and listening to messages of self-discipline and “no pain, no gain”

I thought… ok, maybe I’m an outlier. A golden unicorn. A rare case. An exception. A lucky spit from the universe.

Nice thought, but deep down, I doubted it was the case.

I decided to share my framework with other people and see if it works for them. You can see their testimonials below.

Since Agile is STILL not being discussed in the personal productivity world, I decided screw this. I’ll be the one to pick a fight with the traditional goal-setting advice.

I’ve built the Monthly Method School, where I debunk a lot of traditional productivity advice we hear.

Results that speak for themselves

Nick D. | Vancouver, Canada

Entrepreneur

“The system gives you clarity of focus.

I was able to accomplish more in 3 weeks than I did in the past 3 months.

As an entrepreneur, you don’t get paid for completing your to-do list every day, you get paid for producing results. And that’s what Monthly Method boils down to – getting you results.

With weekly calls and daily accountability check-ins, you never fall off track. It was nice celebrating weekly wins. It is nice to have someone in your corner cheering you on, and Polina was that person.

I can’t recommend Polina’s services highly enough especially if you are looking for a system that will get your results and balance in your life. I will be working with her for the foreseeable future.”

Dr. Singh | London, UK

Osteopath

“It isn’t your traditional self-development type stuff. It is teaching you practical stuff. It is teaching you balance.

I travelled the world, spent thousands on courses and books. The Monthly Method is more practical than anything I have come across.

It doesn’t only teach about being highly productive, it also teaches you about being a human.

I am a much better father. I am more present now than I was before I met Polina. I am also very effective at my job. I am fit and healthy. I am probably in the best shape I’ve ever been.

The system helps you to stay focused on what’s important. Definitely, definitely, highly recommend it.”

Having a definition of done is a godsend in helping a perfectionist to move along.

The concept of living your life in 3-week sprints creates such a sense of excitement and renewed vigor for life that can sometimes be hard to find as we settle into careers and family life. It truly does take the weight off trying new hobbies or habits for a couple weeks, knowing that it’s not forever and that you have an appointment already set with yourself when you’ll evaluate your experience and make changes if needed.
